Living in Cebu

A long narrow stretch of island located at the Southern tip of the Philippines is Cebu .Taken from the root word, ZUBU or Sugbu, Cebu used to be a trading post for our varied southwestern neighbors.

Cebu with its sea-valley- and mountain location is a tropical haven for tourist looking for the untouched wonders of pristine beaches and white sands coupled with modern amenities.

Composed of 166 islands, it includes the city of Mactan, and the islands of Bantayan, Malapascua, Olanggo and Camotes,-its capital being Cebu City. Steeped in culture, history and architectural masterpieces, the island boasts several that are world renown for their endurance and beauty such as the Basilica Minore Del Sto.Nino (the country’s oldest church), and Magellan’s Cross (supposedly planted by Ferdinand Magellan when he arrived in the Philippine Islands in 1521).

Established by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in 1571, Cebu became the first city in the Philippines, pre-dating Manila by 7 years. It is, in fact, is the oldest city in the country. Frequently referred to as the “Queen City of the South”,

Cebu is also famous for its musical stringed instruments like banduria, guitar and piccolo.

Its local people, “the Cebuanos” are known to be friendly and welcoming; speaking the vernacular “Bisaya” and several other related dialects like Tagalog, Hiligaynon and Waray-Waray. As a direct result of centuries of colonial rule, Spanish, Chinese and English are also readily spoken by various sectors of society. Predominantly characterized by its narrow coastlines, limestone plateaus, and coastal plains,Cebu is also known for its “perfect” weather –tropical and sunny all year round. Inner city transport composed of the “jeepney” and taxi makes traveling convenient and easy. The International airport is mere thirty (30) minute scenic drive from the city while the port is full of ferry transport which will take you to neighboring islands.

Among the best things in Cebu is the food, which encompasses a vast majority of flavors and smells. Ranging from local fare -the mouthwatering “lechon baboy” (roast pig), “lechon manok bisaya” (roast local chicken), “tinowa” (fish soap), “danggit” (dried fish) to well known international dishes. There is also a bounty of fruits and fresh vegetables. Fresh seafood from the local markets can be prepared just the way you like at the Sutukil stalls in Mactan.

The biggest festival celebrated every January is the Sinulog, in honor of the Santo.Nino or the child Jesus. Dancing and merriment can be seen in the city streets as everyone dances to the beat of the drums.

Truly, a world-class tourist destination for its rich and varied culture, grand sites, and lively people, the island of Cebu truly lives up to its moniker as the Philippines’ “QUEEN CITY OF THE SOUTH”.
